Ghosting Yourself

The Rewire: Heal Your Nervous System and Reclaim Your Life.

Greetings, Reader!

Have you ever drafted an email, started a creative project, or written a message you were genuinely excited about only to shelve it or delete it at the last minute? [Um, not me staying up way too late last night overthinking a draft of a different email I didn't end up sending this morning!]

Have you sat in a meeting with a clear, brilliant insight, but felt your throat lock up before you could speak?

Have you ever set a bold boundary or goal for yourself, only to retreat the moment things started getting real?

We often label these moments as procrastination, overthinking, self-sabotage, or lack of confidence. But I think this form of ghosting yourself is a protective nervous system response.

Ghosting yourself happens when the impulse to express yourself, expand, or be more visible is met with a sudden, overwhelming physical urge to pull back, disappear, or make yourself smaller.

At some point in your story, being fully seen was not safe.

Perhaps being visible meant becoming the target of someone else's unpredictable anger, judgment, or criticism. Maybe it meant being saddled with overwhelming expectations, or being told you were "too much," "too needy," or "too loud." Or perhaps being invisible was the only way to avoid burdening an already overwhelmed family system.

In those moments, your brilliant young nervous system took notes and created a survival rule:

Invisibility = Safety.
Visibility = Exposure, Rejection, or Threat.

Playing small, staying silent, or being hyper-accommodating was an intelligent act of self-preservation that kept you connected, protected, and safe.

But as an adult, that nervous system pattern can prevent you from stepping into the spotlight of your own life.

You want to launch the business, publish the writing, express your needs in a relationship, or say yes to a big opportunity, but instead of showing up, your nervous system pulls you back into the shadows to protect you from the discomfort of being seen.

Your nervous system doesn't care about your goals, your intelligence, or your vision board: It only cares about your survival and protection.

Instead of facing the perceived threat of external rejection, your nervous system chooses the safer danger: it rejects you first. You ghost yourself before anyone else gets the chance to turn away.

While invisibility protected you in the past, maintaining it as an adult requires an immense amount of physical energy.

When you constantly suppress your voice, boundaries, and truth, that unexpressed survival energy stays trapped in your body. Somatically, this often manifests as chronic tension in the jaw and throat, tightness across the chest, digestive issues, or a deep, persistent physical fatigue that sleep can't fix.

You can't talk yourself out of this biological pattern, and insight alone might not be enough to overcome the instinct.

Your nervous system makes decisions based on prophecy, predicting what will happen in the future based on what happened in the past.

If your nervous system equates visibility with danger, it needs evidence to the contrary. Every time your visibility leads to genuine connection, alignment, and freedom instead of rejection, it helps your nervous system rewrite the story.

You don't need to force yourself out into the world before your nervous system feels ready. But you can begin building the internal capacity to stop disappearing on yourself by meeting your own shame, fear, and discomfort with presence. When you choose not to turn away from yourself, your nervous system begins to trust that its needs will be met, and it can ease up on the protection.
