Why Insight Isn't Enough for Healing

Welcome to The Rewire. Heal Your Nervous System. Reclaim Your Life.

Greetings, Reader!

Do you ever feel like you understand exactly why you react the way you do, and yet you find yourself repeating the same patterns over and over?

So many of the high achievers and sensitive souls I work with have already done so much of the work, but still feel stuck.

Perhaps you’ve also read the books, analyzed your past, and spent years deconstructing your trauma in talk therapy. You have brilliant cognitive insight into your patterns, your triggers, and your history, and yet, you still revert back to the same survival responses and habits of protection that were entrenched years ago, and you can't seem to break the cycles that are keeping you stuck.

You still shutdown during conflict, sacrifice your own needs, get anxious when things feel beyond your control, and hold your stress in your body, bracing your shoulders and stiffening your spine for protection. Pain continues to flare in the same predictable ways, and every few years your back goes out, or your knee starts acting up.

Your nervous system knows how to protect you, and it's really good at it.

Talk therapy is an incredibly valuable tool. It offers emotional validation, narrative clarity, cognitive understanding, and tools to help you navigate anxiety, stress, grief, and other challenging situations in the moment.

The insight you can attain with a trusted counselor can help you discern what is yours to work on, and what is inherited, conditioned, or simply not yours to carry. It can help you understand how the trauma you endured was not your fault, and show you how your past influences your present.

I personally wish everyone had access to a skilled mental health therapist because that work is invaluable.

But I also know that insight alone often isn't enough.

Insight lives in your mind. Survival responses are encoded in your body.

Talking about your past experiences can deepen and reinforce the neural pathways that cause you to keep repeating the same patterns.

Without embodiment, insight can keep you stuck in your story.

Until you can unwind, release, and reintegrate the physical imprint of trauma, you will stay stuck in the loop of knowing why you are suffering without actually feeling relief and being able to move on.

SomatoEmotional Release (SER) explored within the supportive, healing container of CranioSacral Therapy (CST) offers a powerful, embodied pathway to metabolize and release the imprint of pain, stress, and trauma from the body. The physical support of healing touch can help your nervous system feel safe enough to access the deeper truths that have been buried for so long, and are often inaccessible to your conscious, thinking mind.

Much of the pain and struggle in our lives comes from trying so hard not to feel what we have locked away in our bodies. But that pain wants so desperately to be witnessed, that when we suppress it, it finds a way to surface through anxiety, physical pain, fear, or other forms of dis-ease.

These practices are very different from talk therapy, and aren't a substitute, but they can be a powerful supplement.

A few key distinctions:

  • This process doesn't ask you to retell your story or even to consciously know your body's deeper truths.
  • Often your body reveals what your mind has been unable to access.
  • As a CranioSacral Therapist, my role isn't to advise, analyze, or provide insight; it's to offer you the support you need to let your tenderest, most vulnerable parts be seen and heard.
  • It's not about making meaning of your past experiences, but about releasing the hold they have on your body so you don't have to keep repeating the past in the present.

SomatoEmotional Release and CranioSacral Therapy are rooted in the belief that your body knows what it needs and your inner wisdom can guide the way.

It is a beautiful thing to witness the moment when the pain you've been avoiding all these years tells you exactly what it needs and receives the love and support its been craving. There is a physical release that happens when the body stops bracing. Energy starts to flow again, and you settle into a deep peace.

Many folks who have explored these practices with me have said that they've had more relief of physical, mental, and emotional pain than decades of other therapies combined.

When the nervous system no longer has to protect against an internal threat, powerful shifts become possible. You become situated in yourself and can move through challenges with more resilience. You no longer find yourself reacting and protecting. Your relationships deepen and you feel more at home in your body. The habits you've been trying to shift naturally start to fall away. Change becomes, not just possible, but inevitable.

It doesn't come from talking about what happened. It doesn't come from more insight or understanding. It comes from deep presence and actually healing and resolving the pain your body has been carrying for so long.
