Greetings, Reader!
Almost every day in my clinic, I hear some variation of this phrase: "I have to hold it all together."
It's whispered during CranioSacral sessions when the grief that has been held back for so long starts to express itself. It's the unspoken backdrop for the person who takes care of everyone else at the expense of themself. And, it's the subtext in the exhausting thought spirals of the person who chronically overthinks everything to avoid feeling what they have to feel.
In my practice, when we do deep SomatoEmotional Imagery & Dialogue work, we almost always meet a part of the body that is fiercely protective. It often presents physically, as stubborn tightness in the shoulders, an unyielding heaviness in the chest, or a gripping tension in the neck, throat, or belly.
The instinct is often to try to get rid of the discomfort, but the tension is filling an important role, providing protection from emotions that are too dangerous, too inconvenient, or too messy to feel.
When I ask the protective part, "What are you preventing this person from feeling?" and the answer is always the same: "the depth of the feeling," be it sadness, grief, fear, anger, pain, shame, or loss.
There is this unspoken fear that feeling the feelings will lead to an inability to keep up with the demands of life, layered with shame for even having the feelings in the first place.
It hurts my soul that we've been conditioned to believe that our feelings shouldn't exist. The wellness machine has contributed to this by pushing the myth that we are supposed to be calm all the time, so feelings feel like failures.
Somehow, nervous system regulation got conflated with emotional control; with overriding your biological responses so you never look frazzled or feel overwhelmed. But that isn't regulation, it's suppression, and suppression never helps anyone feel free.
Let's be honest:
- You are not dysregulated when you feel anxious over something that is genuinely stressful and uncertain.
- You are not dysregulated when you feel fierce anger over crossed boundaries, injustices, or harm.
- You are not dysregulated when a chronic pain spike terrifies you and makes you fear that your body may never feel like a safe place again.
You are simply having a profoundly human experience.
There are a million tools to "regulate" your nervous system, but too often they are designed to help you bypass your emotions and force your nervous system into compliance. What they all miss is the one thing that actually moves the needle: giving yourself permission to feel what you feel.
As Robert Frost wrote, "The best way out is always through."
Whether you acknowledge it consciously or not, the feelings don't go away when you avoid them.
The body knows what the mind often isn't ready to face. You cannot think, suppress, or avoid your way out of nervous system overload. But when you stop avoiding and resisting the discomfort and actually face it, you can finally complete the stress cycle and move on.
If you resonated with these thoughts, I offer two levels of support to help you gradually and safely unpack what your body has been holding so you feel more radiant and resilient:
CranioSacral Therapy & SomatoEmotional Release:
This is hands-on, gentle bodywork designed to meet those protective parts of your being exactly where they are. We don't force your body to release; we create a space so safe that you no longer have to stay guarded, and you can finally work through what has been keeping you stuck.
The 90-Day Nervous System Reset:
If you are ready to heal your nervous system so you can stop pushing through and start living your life fully, this comprehensive, personalized program is your roadmap. Together, we rewire the neural patterns that keep your nervous system stuck on high alert, expanding your internal capacity so you can stop living on the razor's edge of burnout and overwhelm.
If either of these paths feel aligned, it would be an honor to support you so you can stop barely getting by and start thriving.
