Nothing Can Be Changed Until it is Faced

Greetings, Reader!

Since the CranioSacral training I took a few weeks ago, the universe keeps sending me the same message over and over again: Nothing can be changed until it can be faced.

Right now, I'm guiding someone who we'll call Sarah through a 90-Day Nervous System Reset. This week, she had a massive breakthrough around a pattern so many of my clients carry: chronic people-pleasing.

Sarah has always operated with a deep fear of making other people angry. Her entire nervous system anticipates their potential anger, causing her to instinctively sacrifice her own boundaries and needs just to keep the peace.

During a recent SomatoEmotional Release (SER) experience in a CranioSacral session, Sarah realized that her people-pleasing isn't actually about preventing others from being upset: It's a survival strategy to prevent her own feelings of internal discomfort.

Before this session, Sarah felt like she was failing because she is doing all this nervous system work, and she still didn't feel calm during conflicts. In fact, she was starting to feel more of her own feelings, which in my book, is actually huge progress.

When we believe the cultural lie that our nervous system has to be calm and regulated all the time, then we start to mistake dissociation for regulation.

A healthy nervous system has the capacity to respond to life, which involves feeling our way from activation through reintegration without getting stuck, shutting down, or running away.

When we override our biology, we don't give ourselves the chance to complete the stress cycle and reintegrate. Sarah wasn't moving through her pain, she was just bottling it up. But those emotions didn't disappear, and they were at the root of the chronic anxiety, unyielding pain, and daily overwhelm that caused her to seek my help.

Through CranioSacral Therapy, Sarah was able to give those suppressed emotions a safe place to finally speak. When Sarah listened to what her fear had to say, the root of the pattern became crystal clear.

As a child, Sarah was punished for crying. Instead of her parents soothing her when she was distressed, she had to take on the heavy role of soothing them just to maintain safety in her home.

Her young nervous system learned that other people's emotional discomfort was a direct threat to her survival. People-pleasing wasn't a personality flaw, it was a deeply ingrained, protective response.

As these memories surfaced during CranioSacral Therapy, Sarah's body finally got to do what it hasn't been given permission to do in decades. She allowed herself to feel what she was feeling, without trying to make anyone else feel more comfortable. With support, she was able to listen to and comfort the grief she has been carrying.

By facing the discomfort she has spent a lifetime avoiding, the chronic tension in her nervous system finally began to release, and the neck pain she has had for her entire adult life started to fade. Sarah was finally able to complete the stress cycle that began when she was a child, and the relief was palpable.

Ready to build true capacity?

True resilience is about expanding your capacity to face, feel, and flow through the entire human experience without losing yourself.

Here is how we can work together to build that internal trust:

Let's give your body the space and support it needs to finally face what is ready to be changed.

In love and solidarity,

Rachel

Letters for resilience and courage

Greetings, Reader! Last week I was a Connection Host at the VT Womenpreneur's Summit, and I got to lead conversations with groups of women about the seasons of business. One of the main themes was burnout, and one of the brilliant women in one of my circles said, "Burnout happens when we become the fuel." Every woman in that conversation knew exactly what she meant. Most of the people I know who started their own businesses set out with the intention of having better work-life balance. The...

Letters for resilience and courage

Greetings, Reader! Last week, during the first satsang of my Summer Qigong Series, we did a partner practice with a simple, yet unexpectedly heavy prompt: "What brings you great joy." For some of the members, joy was easy to access, but for many of us, this question revealed just how elusive joy can be. Moving through the embodied practice, I realized that for me, great joy is anything that opens me to presence and flow. It is a sensory, whole-being experience of being fully alive and...

Letters for resilience and courage

Greetings, Reader! Almost every day in my clinic, I hear some variation of this phrase: "I have to hold it all together." It's whispered during CranioSacral sessions when the grief that has been held back for so long starts to express itself. It's the unspoken backdrop for the person who takes care of everyone else at the expense of themself. And, it's the subtext in the exhausting thought spirals of the person who chronically overthinks everything to avoid feeling what they have to feel. In...
