Call your spirit home to your heart

Greetings, Reader!

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, every organ houses a unique aspect of consciousness. The Shen is the spirit of the heart, and it represents your guiding truth, innate intelligence, and authenticity. The Shen is the spark of divine consciousness within you. It is your soul's purpose, and your reason for being here on this planet.

The Shen is often visualized as a red bird nesting in the sanctuary of your heart. As a bird, the Shen can easily scatter and fly away when you are overwhelmed and overextended. When the Shen leaves the body, you might feel like a feather blowing in the wind, and you might find yourself experiencing:

  • A scattered, disorganized mind that can't seem to find traction.
  • Persistent anxiety and restlessness, especially when trying to fall asleep.
  • A deep disconnection from your truth, leaving you feeling lost or hesitant.
  • Chronic indecisiveness and a tendency to be easily influenced by everyone else’s opinions.
  • Burnout and depletion caused by overextending yourself beyond your capacity.

One of my qigong teachers, Stephanie Nosco, said in class recently that, just like an empty house is easier to break into than a full home, when your spirit is disconnected from our body, your energy can easily be stolen.

When your spirit is at home in your heart, you are clear about who you are, you are able to communicate your needs and connect with others without giving yourself away, and you can experience the true joy that comes from living your life authentically.

The Shen is like the north star, guiding you through life with clarity, confidence, and purpose. When the Shen is at home in your heart, you are able to discern what is right for you, and what direction your soul needs to take to thrive.

Ways to Call Your Spirit Back to Your Heart

If your spirit feels disconnected from your body, here are a few ways to tend to your heart space and call your spirit back home.

Stay Cool

The fire element is the energetic force of summer, governing the heart. When the fire element is balanced, you can experience joy, love, awe, and authentic expression.

The Shen requires a cool, calm, and spacious heart to rest in. When you run on the adrenaline of chronic over-functioning, your internal climate becomes completely overheated, evicting your spirit from your body.

When your Shen has been evicted from its home, you lose your internal anchor, and you experience a profound disconnection from your own truth. You find yourself trapped in mental loops, overthinking every decision, feeling chronically anxious, and losing the clarity to know what you actually want.

To call the Shen back home, you must consciously shift from the frantic heat of doing into the cool spaciousness of being.

Maintain Boundaries

When fire is held within a strong container, it generates sustainable light and warmth, and enables your spirit to radiate. But, when you over-give, over-work, and constantly sacrifice your own boundaries for the comfort of others, the fire can consume and deplete all of your resources.

Rather than viewing boundaries as walls, try visualizing them as a supportive trellis, like a tomato cage, providing the scaffolding your life force needs to grow and thrive. Establishing these structures doesn't lock people out; it protects your internal firepower so you can radiate without burning down your own house.

Listen

A congested heart has no room for the spirit to rest. When your internal world is crowded with other people's expectations, demands, and noise, the Shen remains in exile. Taking intentional sensory breaks and sitting in quiet stillness clears the internal clutter. A peaceful, open heart creates the safety your spirit needs to finally return, unfurl its wings, and speak it's truth.

Rest Your Eyes

The fire element also governs the eyes, which have the ability to transform light into color, shape, and form.

As a practitioner, the very first place I look to see the state of someone's Shen is their eyes. When your spirit is healthy and anchored, your eyes have a distinct brilliance, and you radiate warmth and presence.

If you look in the mirror and feel like your inner light has gone flat, perhaps your fire is burning down the house.

During the summer months, when there is more sunlight, your eyes take in more light and can become overheated, which drains your energy. Give your eyes rest breaks throughout the day, and minimize your time on screens. Try misting your face with water or a cooling rose hydrosol to soothe excess heat.

Trust

When the world feels heavy and the path ahead seems unclear, remember that your spirit possesses a natural, cosmic intelligence. It already knows your purpose and direction, if you can filter out the noise enough to let it lead.

When you can no longer see the path clearly,

stay close to your heart.

The river still finds the sea.

The migrating birds still find their way home.

The acorn still carries the shape of the oak.

Let the world rearrange itself,

stay close to your truth.

Letters for resilience and courage

Greetings, Reader! When there is danger, you only have a few options. You can: Fight Run Hide Diffuse the bomb Collectively, these survival responses are often called the 'F' responses: fight, flight, freeze, and today's topic, fawn. If you assess a potentially dangerous situation and decide that you can't escape, your last option before your body completely shuts down and causes you to dissociate is to try to pacify the threat, either by calming the other being down, or by making yourself...

Letters for resilience and courage

Greetings, Reader! Over the past two weeks, we've explored how the flight response keeps us running on the treadmill of chronic hustle, and how an internalized fight response fuels self-criticism, perfectionism, and control. Today, I want to talk about the 3rd 'F' word: Freeze. You know what freeze feels like if you've ever: Sat down to work and then found yourself staring at your screen or scrolling on your phone for hours without getting anything done; Been in a stressful situation and been...

Letters for resilience and courage

Greetings, Reader! Last week we explored how the flight response keeps us running from ourselves, overworking and overproducing to outrun our internal discomfort. Today, let's talk about what happens when our instinctual survival response isn't to run, but to fight. Anger gets a bad wrap in our society, especially for women, and especially for women of color. We are taught to tame it, stuff it down, and smile through it. [Have you seen this montage of women who were interviewed by the...
